Manx born and brought up in the Isle of Man, my journey with art began as soon as I could hold a brush. My first success in art was (about age 5) having my picture of Bambi displayed on the ‘Take Hart’ wall. Even more proudly, I have had monoprints (and cards) displayed at The Manx Museum. I frequently show and regularly sell at local galleries and at the IOM Art Society’s Easter and Autumn exhibitions.

Inspiration

Constantly inspired by nature and our beautiful Manx surroundings, with its rich biodiversity and types of terrain. I am always amazed by the beauty, even in overlooked areas such as brambles, hedgerows & undergrowth. It can be found to host such a wonderful mix of textures, patterns, colours, light and contrasts. I try to capture a moment or flash of life or light, however small, in any scene. Creatures great and small (and their personalities and interactions, observed or imagined) make me keen to capture them somehow, wherever possible. Believing in Manx fairies as a little girl, had a lasting impact and having had two girls myself, I tried to pass a little bit of the magic on, in some of my artwork.

“A sensitive and talented artist whose obvious love of flora and fauna shines through in all her art work”

— Gill Ross

“I have known Kay for over 40 years both as a teacher and a friend.

Kay is exceptionally talented both as an artist and musician. I am the proud owner of one of her lovely paintings, and recently commissioned a painting for a member of staff leaving, who has been promoted on Island. Kay was very flexible in discussing the commission and as a result the outcome was outstanding and admired by all, especially the recipient.

Kay is a lovely person and very approachable. My wife and I hope to increase our collection of Kay’s work in the future.”

— Mike & Gill

“I’ve been a fan of Kay Solly’s work for some time. When I opened my own pop up art shop in 2019 I was delighted Kay agreed to provide me with some of her beautiful stock. It was lovely watching people appreciate Kay’s art while they sipped a coffee.

Kay’s work attracted customers to my business and even my own family purchased a couple of pieces so I can admire them still!

I found Kay to be professional and prompt at all times and in particular when restocking her art, all of which was framed to show her talent in the best way.

— Linda Quirk, The Curator Art Studio and Coffee Shop (2019)
